How long does probate take in the UK in 2026?

The Probate Registry is currently issuing Grants of Probate in 8–16 weeks from a complete online application. Paper applications take longer.

Estates that require an inheritance tax return (IHT400) add a further 4–8 weeks while HMRC issues clearance (form IHT421).

The biggest delays we see are missing original wills, unsigned IHT forms, and incomplete asset values from banks. Our intake catches all three before submission.

If a Grant has been pending more than 16 weeks, you can chase the Probate Registry directly with the case reference — and we will do that for you.
