Help & answers
Frequently asked questions
The questions UK executors ask us every week.
Do I always need probate?+
Not always. It depends on how the assets were owned and each bank or institution's requirements. We can review the estate and explain whether a grant is likely to be needed.
How much does probate cost with you?+
Our probate application service starts from £499. Full estate administration is tailored to the estate. We confirm the work and fee in writing before it begins.
How long does probate take?+
Timescales vary with the estate, tax position, third-party responses and Probate Registry processing. We explain the likely stages for your circumstances and keep you updated.
Is there inheritance tax on my estate?+
IHT is 40% above the £325,000 nil-rate band (frozen to April 2030). The £175,000 Residence Nil-Rate Band may apply, and unused spousal bands are transferable. Our quote tool calculates this for you.
Who will handle my matter?+
You will have a named contact who understands the estate, explains what information is needed and remains available as the work progresses.
What happens if there's no will?+
The Rules of Intestacy (Administration of Estates Act 1925) decide who inherits. The spouse takes chattels, a £322,000 statutory legacy and half the residue; the other half passes to the children.
Can you help executors who don't live in the UK?+
Contact us to discuss the executor's location and the estate. Much of the information gathering can be handled by phone, video call, email and secure document upload.
What if I need to challenge a will?+
Disputed estates need specialist legal advice. We can help identify the issue and explain when an appropriate contentious probate professional may be required.
