The DWP and estate administration

A benefits enquiry is one strand of a much larger job. This page sets out where it fits in the overall administration of an estate.

Information checked: 6 September 2026

The stages of an estate

Most estates follow a recognisable sequence, whatever their size.

  • Register the death and notify organisations
  • Identify assets and liabilities and obtain valuations
  • Deal with the inheritance tax position
  • Apply for the grant where one is needed
  • Collect assets, settle debts and prepare estate accounts
  • Distribute to beneficiaries

Where the DWP fits

A DWP enquiry belongs with the liabilities stage. It rarely blocks the earlier work, but it does affect the point at which it is safe to distribute.

Record keeping

Keep DWP correspondence with the estate file and reflect any confirmed liability in the estate accounts, so beneficiaries can see how the final figures were reached.

How Prudential Probate Services can help

You can ask us to prepare the probate application only, or to handle the wider administration including liaison on estate matters while a benefits review is outstanding. Either way the scope and fee are agreed in writing before work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Do you handle the whole estate?+

We can. Full estate administration is quoted individually after we understand the assets and the work involved.

Do you deal with the DWP for us?+

We help executors understand and respond to what has been asked, and manage the estate administration around it.
