Bank limits for probate
Each UK bank sets its own threshold for releasing funds without a Grant. Below the limit they accept indemnity forms; above it, you need probate.

Typical 2025 thresholds
Barclays £50,000 · HSBC £50,000 · Lloyds / Halifax £50,000 · NatWest / RBS £25,000 · Santander £50,000 · Nationwide £50,000 · Co-operative £30,000 · Metro £20,000 · TSB £50,000. Each bank decides case-by-case; thresholds change without notice.
What banks always require
Certified copy of the death certificate, the original will (if any), executor ID and proof of address, and a completed bereavement / small-estates indemnity form.
When probate is unavoidable
Property held in the sole name of the deceased, NS&I holdings above £5,000, share certificates, or any single account above the bank's release threshold all trigger the need for a Grant.
