Coroner and inquest probate

When a death is referred to the Coroner, the Registrar cannot issue a death certificate until the investigation concludes. This delays — but does not block — probate.

Coroner and inquest probate

Interim certificates

The Coroner issues an Interim Certificate of the Fact of Death which most banks, insurers and the Probate Registry will accept to begin the application.

Filing IHT before inquest concludes

HMRC accepts provisional IHT400 returns pending the inquest outcome. We estimate values, pay any IHT due within the 6-month deadline to avoid interest, and submit corrective accounts (C4) once the final certificate issues.

Compensation, criminal-injury and PI claims

We coordinate with the family's personal-injury solicitor so that compensation, dependency awards and CICA payments are properly accounted for in the estate.
