Rules of intestacy
The statutory order set by the Administration of Estates Act 1925 (as amended) decides who inherits when there is no valid will.

Married / civil partner, with children
Spouse: personal chattels + £322,000 statutory legacy + half the residue absolutely. Children: the other half, split equally, on attaining 18 (held on statutory trust until then).
Married / civil partner, no children
Spouse takes the entire estate absolutely. Parents and siblings receive nothing.
Unmarried partners and step-children
Cohabitees inherit nothing under intestacy, regardless of length of relationship. They may have a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 — we can advise.
No surviving relatives
The estate passes to the Crown (bona vacantia). The Treasury Solicitor administers it.
