Obtaining a copy of the will

Once probate is granted in England & Wales, the will becomes a public document. Anyone can order an official copy from the Probate Registry.

Obtaining a copy of the will

Before probate

Only the named executors are entitled to read the will. Beneficiaries can ask, but executors are not obliged to share it until the Grant issues. We can write to executors on your behalf if you believe you are a beneficiary.

After probate

Order a copy from gov.uk for £1.50 per document, or via the Probate Registry's standing search (form PA1S) if probate has not yet been granted — valid for 6 months.

When a will cannot be found

We search Certainty (the National Will Register), the deceased's solicitors, banks, and home safes. If no will exists, intestacy applies.
